Robert W. Winko 83, of Indianapolis, passed away at home the evening of
August 12, 2010. He was born September 10, 1926 in Shreveport, Louisiana to
Thelma English and Wendel H. Winko who preceded him in death. He was also
preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Barbaralea Winko on May 2, 2010,
as well as his brothers Wendel Henry Winko II, Harold Quinn Winko, and
George Cecil Winko, and sister Frances Kirkindoll. During World War II, he
enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 16, serving on destroyer escorts. He
was retired from Conrail, was a flagsman for Art Zipp's Speedway, later the
Speedrome, a referee for professional wrestling in the State of Indiana, and
a Marion County Reserve Sheriff. He was a member of Englewood Lodge,
Scottish Rite, and the Murat Shrine. Survivors include daughter, Sharon
Winko of Nineveh, son, Gary Winko and wife Jody of Indianapolis, grandsons,
Chris Winko of Terre Haute, Barry Winko and wife Stacy of Indianapolis, and
Nick Winko of Indianapolis, great-grandsons, Tristan and Isaiah Winko of
Indianapolis, sisters, Mary Roberts and Thelma Smith both of Shreveport,
Louisiana and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be Shirley
Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St. on Tuesday from
4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with services on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m.
